The Importance of Preventive Care

Wellness exams are a crucial aspect of helping your pet maintain good physical health for life.

Our vets recommend regular vaccinations, parasite prevention and proper nutrition combined with these wellness exams. These routine examinations include a comprehensive physical checkup that will inspect every area of your pet allowing your vet to provide a complete view of your pet's overall health.

When you bring your dog or cat in for their routine checkup, we can prevent health issues from developing in your pet, or catch them early, when they are most treatable.

Cat & Dog Wellness Exams, Millbrook

What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical

Your Millbrook vet will give your dog or cat a thorough physical checkup to have a better understanding of your pet's veterinary care needs. Routine wellness exams at our animal clinic include the following elements:

General Condition

Your pet's behaviour and appearance are able to provide clues to their overall health. How they stand and walk, their level of alertness, as well as their weight to size are all able to provide valuable information about their health.

Coat & Skin

During your pet's checkup, we will examine your dog or cat's skin and coat for any potential concerns that could possibly include excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss or shedding.

Face & Head

Your pet's eyes, ears, and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. We will also check the mouth for symptoms of dental conditions such as periodontal disease or tooth decay.

Internal Health

Heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are vitally important to your pet's heart health. Our vets will monitor these for abnormalities, and test your pet's lungs for breathing concerns.

We will then check the lymph nodes for any pain or swelling, and examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal, without signs of discomfort.

Review of Findings

Once the wellness exam has been completed your vet will discuss the results and any concerns that they may have as well as develop a treatment plan for any conditions that may have been diagnosed. Your vet will also take this time to talk about the nutritional requirements for your pet.

Checkups for Puppies & Kittens

Puppies and kittens require special attention during their first few weeks of care in order to provide them with a good, healthy start.

When you bring your new pet in to see our vets, we will perform a complete physical examination, administer the necessary immunizations, and deworming medication. During this visit, we will also perform testing for intestinal parasites.

If you have any concerns when it comes to raising your new pet please don't hesitate to reach out. Our vets are happy to provide information and answer any questions that you may have about the care of young pets.

Once your puppy or kitten's checkup is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots

Seniors

With the modern advances in veterinary medicine, we are able to provide optimal care for pets allowing them to live longer lives than ever before.

While this is terrific news for pets and their owners, it also means that we now need to take extra care to monitor pets as they age. As your pet surpasses middle age, regular examinations become increasingly crucial to ensure ongoing optimal health and physical wellness.

In addition to the routine wellness procedures we perform on all adult pets, we will closely monitor your senior pet's potential geriatric conditions, such as arthritis or decreased vision.

As your pet ages, your vet may recommend including additional diagnostic testing to provide more detailed information about your senior pet's overall health and well-being.

Vaccinations & Prevention

During your pet's veterinary checkup at our Millbrook animal hospital, the vet will ensure that all preventive care needs and vaccinations are up-to-date.
